http://www.redlightcenter.dk http://rlcenter.blogspot.com This is with no doubt the most underrated of Russ Meyer's movies which is a damn shame since it also is one of his all time finest! Anything in it just seems perfect! I can hardly point out anything bad about 'Common Law Cabin'. The running time, 69 minutes, guarantee that there isn't one dull moment to find. From the wonderful opening credit sequence which shines of unpretentious minimalism, the names of the cast and crew is written on colorful signs placed in the sand which Adele Rein pass by, till the very spectacular finale the film is running in the highest gear. Meyer has written the script together with Jack Moran, whom he also worked together with on 'Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!' and 'Good Morning... and Goodbye!' two movies which also are among his best. In this one he also stars as Dewey Hoople, an alcoholic and divorced father, who runs a lousy tourist-trap of a beach spot called "Hoople's Haven". Together with his 16 year old daughter Carol(Adele Rein) and his French wife Babette(Babette Bardot! What a name!). Dewey got a pal, Cracker(Meyer regular Frank Bolger), who owns a boat and usually sails to the nearest town and talk strangers to waste their precious time at "Hoople's Haven". One fine day he arrives with Dr. Ross(John Furlong), his shameless wife Sheila(Alaina Capri) and the suspect detective Barney(Ken Swofford). Barney is armed and on the run and from the first minute he start making trouble. First he make Cracker leave so the people are totally isolated. The next moment he slowly seduce all three of the women and insults to sell the area. Later murder will follow in this thriller-drama. Like most other Meyer movies, 'Common Law Cabin' contains many colorful comedic elements of hilarious sleaziness and wicked dialog. The women all spend a lot of time to shake their pleasant curves. But under the kitchy surface is 'Common Law Cabin' a pretty twisted and disturbing flick. A great example of the very unique style Meyer created with his movies. They are indeed a genre of their own. Barney is a misogynist thug and he both play dirty tricks on the women and takes hostages. It culminate quite violent. Ken Swofford provide a truly brilliant psycho performance. Dewey also have some highly unpleasant fantasies about Carol, though she looks pretty shapely for a 16 year old she is sweet and innocent. I liked the women a lot and it is a shame that Meyer didn't took more use of these three. Especially Alaina Capri who only appeared in one other movie, 'Good Morning... and Goodbye!', but where great in them both. 'Common Law Cabin' is a true Russ Meyer classic that delivers with style, music and total attitude! For fans this is a movie not to be missed!
